What is Fava Beans?

Fava beans are a legume that grow on tall stalk-like plants full of leaves and the pods which contain the fava beans. These pods are green with a very thick body and are generally eight inches long, but can grow up to 1 foot. The pod is opened to remove the fava beans which are covered in thick skin which should be removed before eating. The beans themselves are green, large and look like a fat and wide kidney bean. The flavor is meaty and a little starchy. Fava beans pair well to be accompanied with sauces to lend them greater depth of flavor and add moisture.
