What is Shellac?

Shellac is a manufactured food product made from an excretion from female lac bugs. This resin is lab processed to be used particularly in confection making, on coffee beans and fruit. Shellac is clear, flavorless and adds a sheen to the food it is added to. It is not to be eaten as a food product, but added to enhance physical appearance.
