What is Green Plantains?
Plantains are related to the banana and look like a large version of one. Green plantains are roughly 1 foot long and thicker than a banana. Plantains can be eaten at varying stages of ripeness. When they are green they have a thick, tough to peel skin and a semi-hard fruit, with a texture that is reminiscent of a very firm banana. The fruit of the plantain is starchy, bland and cream colored. Plantain chips, also called tostones are made by frying or baking thin slices of green plantain. The green plantain is used more for savory dishes, than for for sweet ones.
